You raise two great points, Kathy H. (St. Blogwen). I think a card made by church volunteers especially for fellow members would be much better received than a mass-produced card made for the general public. Nothing says "We care" like a donated leftover from a garage sale, right? An additional way to acknowledge individuals' milestones, depending on the size of the church, an acknowledgement during the petitions or at the end of worship services of that week's birthday -- and baptismal birthday -- celebrants might be possible. Neat idea, especially with the crafted cards. I know the ladies mean well when they stock up on those miscellaneous boxes of cards For All Occasions, but it can be a little depressing to get one.

But even more than birthdays, congregations should acknowledge each member's baptismal anniversary, which is the symbol of his or her REbirth!
